The Golden Legacy from Mugu: Connecting You to Himalayan Cordyceps

Imagine the majestic Himalayas, where time-honoured knowledge merges with nature’s finest creation: Himalayan Cordyceps. Our story starts 100 years ago in the secluded valleys of the Mugu Bhot Region with Tumnang Lama as the visionary leader. The boundless heart of this leader reached the size of mountains, bringing together split villages while initiating a knowledge legacy and identifying the precious gift the Mugu has within it: “Yarcha Gunbu – Himalayan Cordyceps”.

Tumnang Lama’s vision extended beyond leadership to create a sustainable base for future generations by making the community involved in the harvesting of Cordyceps. He believed education was essential both for personal development and the well-being of his community and played a vital role in the establishment of a school and motivated them. He created more than a school by cultivating a learning culture that involved community participation to recognize its significance and align the curriculum with local requirements. In the King’s reign period in Nepal, Tumnang Lama managed political complexities by maintaining respectful discussions with the Kathmandu government, which allowed the Mugu Bhot region to gain representation not only with its unique culture but also with its natural resources, including Yarcha Gunbu (Himalayan Cordyceps). Through his diplomatic skills, he built powerful connections with Tibet, which enabled successful trade partnerships to exchange Cordyceps and other local products for daily essentials like salt, sugar, wool, etc., as the currency was not in practice during that era.

The essence of unity and visionary spirit that defined Tumnang Lama found its continuation through his daughter, Chiring Minjom Lama. In the stunning Himalayan landscape, she brought up her family, including Pema Sherap Lama, while teaching them to honor their heritage and nature. The family grasped the immense power Cordyceps possessed as a sacred peak treasure.

After his early education in Mugu, Pema moved to Kathmandu, continuing his studies and delving deeper into the Cordyceps trade along with his father, Palju Tamang. In 2007, he began exploring the market, traveling to Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, etc. where he witnessed the global demand and premium value of this Himalayan treasure, inheriting this golden legacy. He developed a method to connect the pure Cordyceps harvest from the Mugu Bhot region (some parts of Karnali, including Dolpa) to the world. And so, Himalayan Cordyceps was born.

We’re more than just a company; we’re a connection to the heart of the Himalayas, delivering Cordyceps that we harvest with respect, honouring ancestral traditions, and supporting the communities who protect this natural treasure. Every strand of our Cordyceps carries the essence of Tumnang Lama’s vision –  “Unity, Purity, and Continuity.”

Choosing Himalayan Cordyceps means more than picking a product because you also embrace our story along with the essence of the Himalayas. Your purchase maintains a long-standing integrity tradition while providing you with direct access to the origins of this remarkable gift. Himalayan Cordyceps from the Mugu Bhot region bring you both the golden legacy and vital energy found in every single strand.

Yarcha Gunbu: The Himalayan Treasure

Cordyceps Sinensis, known across the Himalayas, particularly in Nepal and Tibet, as Yarcha Gunbu (which translates to ‘winter worm, summer grass’), is one of nature’s most fascinating and historically valued substances. It’s not a simple plant or mushroom, but rather a unique composite organism.

A unique parasitic relationship develops between the fungus Ophiocordyceps Sinensis and ghost moth larvae found in Himalayan and Tibetan Plateau alpine meadows above approximately 4,000 meters. The fungus spores infect the caterpillar while it lives underground. Over the winter, the fungus grows, consuming the caterpillar’s body from within. Come spring, as the snow melts, a slender, dark brown, stalk-like fruiting body emerges from the deceased caterpillar’s head and pushes up through the soil.

For many centuries traditional Tibetan and Chinese wellness practices have relied heavily on Yarcha Gunbu (Himalayan Cordyceps). Traditional practices regard it as a precious treasure because it supports vitality and stamina while promoting respiratory health and general well-being. Yarcha Gunbu is considered a precious natural treasure because of its natural rarity and because it grows under extreme conditions which make locating and harvesting by hand very challenging.
